The Character of Antigone Antigone, the character for which the play was named, is a very complex character. She seems to change directions all throughout the play and there is never one point in which you know exactly what she will do because she is just that unpredictable. This unpredictability also makes her seem very hypocritical because she will say something and then turn on a dime and say the complete opposite. Antigone’s character is very intriguing strictly due to the fact that she keeps you guessing. The following will show the many variations that her character shows throughout the play. There are several points in the play that Antigone seems very heroic, especially when she is speaking to Creon about her†¦show more content†¦All of these heroics, however, in a very short time make her look very selfish. After Creon tells her the story about her brother’s bodies, she takes the stance that she must bury her brother for herself. That all but erases the thought of her, as a hero because all of her actions that were thought to have been done for Polynices were only done to satisfy her own needs. The one characteristic of Antigone that seems to be constant throughout the play is her stubbornness. From the beginning of the play when she sneaks out to bury her brother after Creon had specifically told her not to, all the way to the end when she is given the opportunity to marry Haemon and go on living but forces her own death. She always seemed to fight everything for as long as possible, never taking the easy way out if it compromised her beliefs. In the end it was her stubbornness that ultimately killed her. Antigone also attempts to come across as the so-called ‘innocent victim’. When she is first found out and Creon confronts her, she pushes the fact that she had to do it for Polynices. Even when that reason went to hell and she changed her story to say that she had to bury him for herself, she still said she was bound to do it, which represents Antigone trying to make herself look innocent by saying she had to do it. I do not think there is a right or wrong answer as to whether she was an innocent victim or not, but the question is posed all throughout the play. Orwell George Orwell Title: Life and Works of George Orwell Author: Nigel Flynn Copyright: 1990 The Rourke Corporation George Orwell also known as Eric Arthur Blair lived from 1903 - 1950. He was a British writer who wrote documentaries, essays, and articles. He was born in Motihari, India. Orwell was educated at Eton College in England. From an early age Orwell said, Perhaps the age five or six, I knew that when I grew up I should be a writer. After Orwell did not win a university scholarship at Eton College he joined the Indian Imperial Police. He served with the Indian Imperial police in Burma from 1922 - 1927. At the age of twenty- four, he started to teach himself how to write. After his time as a police officer in Burma he returned to England for a couple of years he went on living in London and then Paris among the poor. Out of George Orwells experiences he wrote about conditions in his life and ordeals that occurred that no one had ever done before. Orwell experienced many difficulties in his field. First as a police officer in Burma he saw how brutally the people where being treated by the other police officers. He also wrote about his resignations that he had about domination of people over each other. When Orwell returned from Burma he returned as a poor very sick writer trying to find his way. He lived in poverty for several years, before he made his way to London. He would later write a book about his homeless conditions entitled Down and Out in Paris and London. In December of 1936, Orwell decided to enlist in the POAM, the Socialist military party in Spain, during the Spanish Civil War. Orwell fought for socialism in Spain, but was wounded in the neck and forced to return to England in 1938. After he returned from the war he would wrote about the conditions he encountered in the battlefield. Like all his reasons for writing the main purpose Orwell went to Spain was as he said, Was to kill fascists. Later that year Orwell became ill with Tuberculosis. The disease would later be his downfall in health and in his writing. He made many contributions throughout his life to humanity; however, his biggest was what he wrote about in his books. That I believe is his biggest contribution to society. Orwell was telling people about the conditions that he encountered such as: what the coal miners where going through. Which he wrote about in The Road To Wagon Pier. In this book he wrote about the evil conditions, foul housing , bad pay, and unemployment that the coal miners had to deal with. By doing this he rose awareness about the situation so they could be helped. George Orwell was the kind of writer who had to be in the center of activity. He wrote about the things people didnt want to acknowledge were going on or about political subjects he did not agree with in society. He went wherever he needed to raise awareness about a cause. On January 21st 1950, while working on a series of articles Orwell died of complications from Tuberculosis. Since cholesterol was a definite factor in mortality rate, the numbers presented on 2002 Death Rates by Race/Ethnicity, have a correlated compliance with these views.   The leading death rate among each group (Black, White, Latino, and Asian) is the heart. Cholesterol is the main contribution to heart attacks because it is through cholesterol that the heart may lose its functioning abilities.   Attention, however, must be drawn to the Asian statistics, that present less than half the numbers of blacks in the same category (Blacks = 308, Asian =135). The spread sheet concerning poverty also presents a valid point, however, the numbers, over a span of thirty years are still not drastic in their differences from 1973-2003.   The recent US trends to healthy living (i.e. the enthusiastic hunt for free of trans-fat foods, low-fat, non-fat, sugar-free etc.) may change the numbers on this graph if current research had been included (up to 2006).

What is NaNoWriMo, how does it work, and why should you participate? image via instagram.com/nanowrimo A long time ago authors relied on wealthy patrons like kings and queens  to fund their work. Writing was a laborious manual process in which relatively few could engage as a hobby, much less turn into a livelihood. Our world is very different. Word processors have made writing cheap and easy, and the combination of electronic commerce and self-publishing places the power of sales and distribution at the fingertips of all. Anyone can be an authoreven youand that is why NaNoWriMo exists: to help literary aspirants unlock their dreams. For one month, starting on November 1st, NaNoWriMo contestants will write furiously for thirty days. During that period there will be 4.5 weekends, 21 weekdays, and 1 holiday. To meet the 50,000 word goal each writer must compose 1,667 words a day, or spend roughly 3 hours a day writing 500 words an hour (a reasonable target for new writers). These words must all tie character, plot, and setting together into some cohesive whole, telling a story that is a unique product of the writers imagination, hopefully filled with a little bit of the writers own passions and convictions. image via instagram.com/nanowrimo Though NaNoWriMo is billed as a competition, writers do not compete with each other, but against the clock and their own discipline and creativity. Most cities have local NaNoWriMo regional communities that host write-ins during the month of November, often at coffee shops, libraries, or homes. Write-ins are perhaps the only socially acceptable way to meet with a bunch of like-minded friends and then completely ignore them all while typing furiously away on a keyboard! Okay, writers take frequent breaks to refill their coffee mugs, discuss stories, give encouragement, and laugh at atrocious prose. Writing together can be a rich, rewarding,  bonding  experience for all. NaNoWriMo  provides pep-talks from seasoned professional writers to help motivate and encourage new (and old!) participants, as well as a rich forum for connecting with WriMos (yes, that is what we call ourselves) from around the world. When you sign up, you will have a personalized dashboard on which you can track your own writing progress and connect directly  with other members in your home region. Each regions Municipal Liaison (ML) will direct and coordinate group activities, distribute helpful internet links,  publish forum posts with writing tips and tricks, and generally be available to answer any questions you might have. Whether a writer reaches the 50,000 word goal or not by November 30th, their effort is celebrated and applauded by  the  community.  Some people finish their books early, some people  write more than  50,000 words before December, and others who dont finish often  take time in December to wrapup  because their own excitement and energy compels them. My home region throws a party in December to celebrate every St. Louis participants accomplishments, no matter what they are. If you want to be a writer, or just want to challenge yourself personally, consider becoming a WriMo and connecting with your home regions members. On the whole Marx believed that production changes more swiftly than the relations of production. For example, first the technology of say, Internet was being developed and only then was the laws that are relating to the technology were developed.
